ReText is a simple text editor for Markdown syntax. ReText is available for other platforms and offers a live preview of rendered Markdown: MarkdownPad is for Windows, but provides live preview. The preview is updated when you save the text file. Also if you want it to work like a word processor, turn on visual-line-mode (again from the menus).Mac only, Marked provides markdown and multi-markdown preview for any text editor. Then install the latest version of org, again from the package manager. Emacs has a package manager now in the menus, where you can find software like that to install. Install the Leuven theme to start (here's what it looks like in one org configuration: ). On the Mac, for a beginner I'd suggest getting started with this build of emacs: or perhaps Aquamacs. Unfortunately there's a bit of a learning curve. And that's just the start of what org can do.Īnd as a bonus you can edit Fountain in emacs too. For one, you can integrate org and LaTeX directly through something called org-babel (and in fact you can integrate a myriad of stuff). If you're not wedded specifically to Markdown, there is something called org-mode that has a Markdown-like syntax and which will blow your mind. Unlike most of the options, emacs can easily handle your #2 requirement. If you're a LaTeX junkie, you should give emacs another shot if you aren't familiar with it. I just don't see why this isn't available in a Markdown inspired world. But then it does everything I need it to do (aside from not playing well with the rest of the world). Occasionally I'm annoyed that there are distractions and it doesn't play well with the rest of the world. I started using Fountain only because LaTeX didn't have a simple way to format screenplays.īut LaTeX is still the best. I found Markdown when a friend bought me a copy of Highland to read his script and I started using it, enjoying the simplicity of Fountain. I'm looking for a Markdown editor that can do these seemingly basic things. (Neither iA nor Ulysses nor Highland can do this) example1.txt inserts text from that file into a master file Ulysses, although they have document merge and export options, can't do this but iA Writer can Highland can't)ģ) Being able to number sections automatically so when I add something I don't have to do it manually. Three things I'm looking for in a Markdown(ish) editor are:ġ) Being able to comment out lines (iA Writer doesn't seem to be able to do this but Ulysses can)Ģ) Being able to assemble a larger document from smaller documents with line instructions (e.g. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
